A valve actuator is the part of the automation package that turns a control signal into physical motion — but that also makes it the part most likely to fail in a way nobody notices until it matters. Advantage: Forces the sizing decision (torque with proper safety factor, correct fail-safe action, right mounting interface) to be made deliberately, avoiding an actuator that’s technically installed but wrong for the process safety requirement.
Disadvantage / limitation: A datasheet alone doesn’t install anything — it needs to be paired with a method statement to actually get the actuator mounted and commissioned correctly.

2. Method Statement

3. Risk Assessment
Why you need it: Unexpected valve movement during mounting or testing is one of the more serious hazards on an automation package — and most sites require a documented risk assessment before a permit is issued.
Advantage: Having hazards, likelihood/severity ratings, and controls pre-populated speeds up the HSE review cycle — you’re validating and adjusting, not writing from zero under time pressure.

Advantage: Protects both contractor and client: hold points create a paper trail proving critical steps like fail-safe direction were actually verified, not just assumed correct.
Disadvantage / limitation: An ITP only works if hold points are actually respected on site — a document alone doesn’t enforce discipline, the team still has to follow it.
