Free Fire Risk Assessment Template – Download Word Format
Are you responsible for fire safety at your facility but unsure where to start with documentation? A properly completed fire risk assessment is not just a legal requirement in most countries — it is the foundation of every fire safety management system. The good news: you don’t have to start from a blank page.
This post gives you a complete, professional Fire Risk Assessment template in Word format — free to download, fully editable, and structured to international fire safety standards.
What Is a Fire Risk Assessment?
A fire risk assessment (FRA) is a systematic evaluation of a workplace or building to identify fire hazards, assess the risk to people, and determine what actions are needed to reduce that risk to an acceptable level.
Under frameworks such as the UK Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, NFPA 101 (USA), and SFDA / Civil Defence requirements in Saudi Arabia and the GCC, every responsible person must ensure a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment is in place and reviewed regularly.
The five key steps of any fire risk assessment are:
- Identify fire hazards (ignition sources, fuel, oxygen)
- Identify people at risk (employees, visitors, contractors, vulnerable persons)
- Evaluate, remove, or reduce the risks
- Record findings, prepare an emergency plan, and provide training
- Review and update the assessment regularly
What’s Inside the Free Template?
Our Fire Risk Assessment template (Document No. FDH-FRA-001) is a professionally formatted Word document that covers all five steps in a structured, easy-to-use format. Here’s what’s included:
Section 1 – Premises Information
Capture facility name, address, occupancy type, number of floors, and maximum occupancy.
Section 2 – Fire Hazard and Risk Register
A full table to document each hazard: location, persons at risk, likelihood, severity, risk rating (L × S), existing controls, and required actions. Five populated example rows cover the most common industrial hazards — electrical faults, flammable chemicals, hot work, arson risk, and kitchen equipment.
Section 3 – Risk Rating Reference Matrix
A colour-coded 5×5 risk matrix (Low / Medium / High / Critical) so your team can consistently rate each hazard without guesswork.
Section 4 – Fire Precautions and Detection Inventory
Document your fire alarm system, detectors, extinguishers, emergency lighting, exit signage, sprinklers, and gas cutoff panels with service dates and status.
Section 5 – Corrective Action Plan
Track every action required with responsible person, target date, priority level, and current status — exactly what an auditor or Civil Defence inspector expects to see.
Section 6 – Sign-Off and Approval
A formal three-signature block for Assessor, Reviewer, and Responsible Person.
Who Should Use This Template?
This template is suitable for:
– Safety Officers and HSE professionals conducting site assessments
– Facility Managers responsible for fire safety compliance
– Fire Protection Engineers preparing documentation for clients
– Contractors and systems integrators required to submit fire safety documentation
– Students preparing for NEBOSH, IOSH, or Safety Officer certification exams
Whether you manage an office, warehouse, factory, camp facility, or industrial plant, this template gives you a professional starting point that you can adapt to your site in under an hour.
How to Use the Template
Step 1 — Download the Word file using the link below.
Step 2 — Fill in the Premises Information section with your facility details.
Step 3 — Walk through the building with the Hazard Register open. Add or modify rows for each hazard you identify.
Step 4 — Rate each hazard using the Risk Matrix table as your guide.
Step 5 — Complete the Fire Precautions inventory with actual service dates and status.
Step 6 — Assign all corrective actions in Section 5 with clear owners and deadlines.
Step 7 — Obtain signatures from all responsible parties and schedule the next review date.
Important Notes on Competency
A fire risk assessment must be carried out by a “competent person” — someone with adequate training, knowledge, and experience to recognise fire hazards and understand what constitutes an adequate control measure. If you are not confident in your competency, consider engaging a qualified fire safety consultant.
This template is provided as a free resource to help you understand the structure and content of a fire risk assessment. It should always be adapted to your specific premises, local regulations, and risk profile.
